WriteIDE 0.7.3: every resource pool, clearer History, safer scene changes

WriteIDE 0.7.3 is now available. Download the 0.7.3 release for macOS, Windows, or Linux.

This release answers the most common request since 0.7: resources that are not HP and MP. It also makes sure a stat change made away from the editor is recorded at the story position you meant, and it explains History, Scenes to review and scene deletion in plainer terms. The full list of smaller repairs is at the bottom.

Damage, healing and Record a change see every resource

Apply damage, Heal and Record a change now list every numeric resource a character has, such as Qi, Stamina or Focus, alongside HP and MP. Depleted resources stay in the list, decimal values are supported, and each resource keeps its own maximum.

A single change can touch several resources at once, with an optional consumable used in the same step. Everything is recorded together at the scene you chose, and a failure leaves nothing half-written. If a maximum is missing or invalid, WriteIDE says so instead of guessing one from the current value.

Automatic XP and level-up progression is a separate feature and is not part of this release.

Changes land where you are looking

Edits from a character sheet's Stats tab, and Cmd+K commands used away from the editor, are now recorded at the Story Overview position, the same place Record a change uses. Before, they floated at the last scene and quietly moved when you added earlier scenes. The sheet shows the destination before you save and confirms where the change landed afterwards.

Opening a character from a past or pinned Overview keeps that position: the sheet shows stats and class as they were, read-only, and View Current returns you to the editable present.

Explain what History is holding

A change recorded without a scene now says so: Recorded without a scene link, plus the scene that currently holds its story position. Choose Link to scene… to attach it to the scene you intended.

When you delete a scene that holds recorded changes, the confirmation tells you how many and offers to move them to a neighboring scene so they stay linked, or to keep them in History without a scene link. Moving the changes and deleting the scene happen together; if one fails, neither does.

Scenes to review follows your reorganizing

Moving, merging or deleting scenes can leave a stat block disagreeing with the values recorded at its new position. WriteIDE now opens a Scenes to review item in exactly that case, names what moved, and leaves blocks that still agree alone. An item shows the recorded edit that prompted it, lets you open that scene without marking the item reviewed, and survives ordinary scene saves.

The Scenes to review entry under Review now shows a count and works from the keyboard, and inspection uses your project's own scene numbers. Three review jobs now have distinct names: Versions for saved copies of your writing (also on the chapter toolbar), Scenes to review for stat blocks that may be out of date, and Character stat checks for a character's own recorded history.

Spreadsheet-imported characters work with Level up, Damage and Heal

A tracker created from a spreadsheet has columns named Level or HP rather than WriteIDE's built-in short names. Level up, Apply damage and Heal now recognize those stats by name and record against them. A character with no matching stat gets a plain message, and nothing is written or reported as recorded. The first-session checklist for a spreadsheet tracker now counts the import as your baseline and adds a step to check the change in the character's Stat history.

A compact character sheet

Stats, Inventory, Skills and Quests keep a compact character heading so primary actions stay in view, with stat and inventory setup actions in keyboard-accessible menus. The narrative tabs keep the full identity.

What stays separate

Linked DOCX write-back and returned-PDF annotation review remain disabled while their own acceptance work continues. The existing manuscript import and export paths remain available.

Fixes and refinements

  • Record a change right after a tracker import works. It opens the character picker instead of doing nothing.
  • The level-up preview names the real stat for an imported Level column instead of a literal LVL badge.
  • Command search matches the labels you see, so the visible name of an action finds it.
  • Pickers are readable in Nightjade. Skill, Item and Quest pickers on a character sheet have proper contrast, and Escape or Cancel returns focus to the control that opened them.
  • The slash-command tip gets out of the way. It disappears when you start writing or a save succeeds, stays dismissed, and no longer covers your prose.
  • Dragging a scene down lands after its target, including onto the last scene of a chapter.
  • Cancelling the spreadsheet chooser keeps your tracker name and returns focus to Choose spreadsheet.
  • Project start is one flow. Starting a manuscript, import or tracker uses the same steps, an import under review stays open while the library refreshes, and a new tracker opens on its Overview.
  • History checks refresh after you apply a stat system, and editor character details stay open and show the updated system after a stat update.
  • Scene saves keep open review items; actual scene deletion and merging still resolve them as before.

WriteIDE remains free, local-first, and account-free. Download 0.7.3, or use Check for Updates in the app.
