Word Count to Reading Time Calculator

Enter a word count or paste your text, and read the time it takes, the page count, the audiobook length, and whether the chapter fits serial pacing. Everything runs in your browser.

250 words a minute is a common pace for adult fiction. Drop toward 150 for careful reading, push toward 400 for a fast skim.

This turns a big word count into chapters and weeks of runway, so an arc or a whole book reads as a release plan, not just a number.

The gold marker sits at your chosen speed. A slower reader spends the extra minutes on the left of the curve.

How the reading time is worked out

Reading time is the word count divided by a reading speed, rounded up to the next whole minute. The default speed is 250 words a minute, a defensible midpoint for adult silent reading of fiction. Careful reading sits nearer 150, and a fast skim can pass 400, which is why the speed is a slider you can move to your own readers.

The audiobook figure uses 150 words a minute, the usual narration pace, and the page count uses 275 words a page, the standard midpoint between a double-spaced manuscript and a printed novel. Both are estimates, so they are labelled with a tilde rather than presented as exact.

What counts as a good chapter length

On Royal Road and most web serials, chapters tend to sit between 1,500 and 4,000 words, with about 2,500 as a common sweet spot. A shorter chapter suits a daily update, and a longer one suits a slower posting schedule. The pacing verdict on this page reads your word count against those norms as a rough guide, not a rule.

  • Under 1,000 words reads fast but leans on a daily cadence to feel worthwhile.
  • 2,000 to 3,500 words is the length most serial readers expect from a single chapter.
  • Over 8,000 words is closer to a whole arc, and usually reads better split across several posts.

Every figure is computed in your browser

The word count, reading time, page count, and serial stats are plain arithmetic that runs on this page. Nothing you paste is sent anywhere, and it keeps working with your network off. WriteIDE shows the live word count and reading time of every scene and chapter as you write, across a whole book, so a number you check here matches the one you see inside the app. Read more on the features page.

WriteIDE does this for your whole book, automatically

This tool handles one at a time. WriteIDE is the desktop studio that tracks LitRPG stats, items, skills, and quests across a whole novel, and keeps them correct at every scene.
